What is the Badi Calendar?

The Bahá’í calendar, known as the Badi Calendar was created by the Báb and adopted by Bahá’u’lláh. It was commenced on March 21st, 1844. A year in the Badi calendar is composed of 19 months and of 19 days each. A transitional period of 4 days in regular and 5 days in leap years between the 18th and 19th month are known as the Ayyám-i-Há. Saturday is designated as the beginning of the week. The calendar also includes a 19-year cycle called Váhid and a 361-year cycle called Kull-i-Shay.’ The current year is 165 Baha’i Era (B.E) of the year Ahad (13) of the 9th Váhid of the 1st Kull-i-Shay.’

Why use the Badi calendar?

Our communication mediums greatly effects how we presently think, what we remember of the past and how we plan the future. The world is advancing in a different speed and mode now. Consider the human advancement since the inception of this calendar (1844); a task that maybe took a regular month (30 days) to be completed can now be completed in a Badi month (19 days) or even less. The speed and mode of operation has changed, so why not the calculating factor (calendar)?

Is the Badi calendar useful in this age?

The calendar is yet another teaching and tool given by Baha'u'llah to the world. Since calendars are a form of communication, compare it to His teachings on a universal language; whether we think they are useful for this age or not is a personal choice.

What's wrong with the Gregorian, Islamic, Persian, Hindu, Zoroastrian, Aztec or other calendars?

Nothing. Every religion and era has it's calendar and the Badi calendar is established to meet the needs of the Baha'i era.

What is a solar calendar? What other calendars are solar based?

A solar calendar indicates the position of the earth as it revolves around the sun. Other established calendars that use this system include Gregorian, Julian , Coptic, Iranian, Malayalam, Tamil, Thai and few others.

There are already Baha'i calendars in use, why this?

Those calendars are the regular 12-month Gregorian calendars with the Badi dates filled-in. This is a 19-month Badi calendar with the Gregorian built-in.

Isn't it hard to keep up with the 19-month calendar?

Our current design makes it easy to stay synced with the Gregorian calendar. In addition, the easiest way to keep up at first is to remember that feast is always on the first day of the month. So flip it either before or after the feast.
